Taking after her namesake, Florence pursued nursing as a career after the death of her mother left the family desperately in need of money. Young Florence didn't get very far in her course of study - she was much too squeamish. The experience was valuable, however. It was her work with burn victims that intimately showed her how closely one's appearance and self-esteem were connected. And so, the science of beauty was born.
